Ocean Discovery Institute

Ocean Discovery Institute (ODI) - is focused exclusively on educating kids in the under serviced area of City Heights, San Diego, a low-income, racially diverse and urban community. ODI has built a 'Living Lab' in the heart of City Heights, a state-of-the-art science education facility.

  • Each year, ODI reaches over 6,000 students from kindergarten through 12th grade with three key program areas:

    • In-School Programs for K-8th grade. In elementary school, students receive a field trip to the coast (e.g., wetlands, tidepools, kelp forest), Living Lab, and a lesson in the classroom. In middle school, students will spend an extended day at the Living Lab learning about making a difference in their community.

    • Out-of-School Programs for K-5th grade. Students attend a week-long camp at the Living Lab after school and over the summer. They do hands-on science (e.g., look under a microscope to learn about plankton, discover the DNA of crabs and hike through the canyon to learn about native plants), interact with volunteers who are in science careers, and reflect on their future.

    • Leadership Programs for 9th grade – College and Careers. These students receive weekly coaching with leadership coaches, participate in 12-day intensive summer experiences, and receive mentorship as they prepare for college and transition into careers.
